Teacher Launch Seminar History
The first ROCKETS Teacher Launch Seminar was held on May 16, 2007 at the Rider University Campus. The event was designed to attract teachers who work with pre-school and early elementary school children in at-risk areas. The committee was thrilled to see over 60 teachers attend the session with over 90% coming from at-risk schools and daycare centers. This one-day event will help bring science to over 1200 children!
Through the exciting, energetic leadership of Steve Spangler, the teachers participated in non-stop hands-on science activities. They learned how to teach centripetal force by swirling pennies and hex nuts in balloons, they experimented with colored crystals and Insta-Snow, and saw the magic of Mentos and Diet Coke. The fast pace and hands-on nature of the seminar held the teacher's attention and had many suggesting it be a 2-day event.
The evaluations from the teachers showed excellent marks from nearly everyone across all aspects of the program and prompted several teachers to send thank-you notes to the JLGP. The teachers left the seminar with the knowledge, supplies and enthusiasm to bring science into their classrooms and extend the ROCKETS mission of Raising Our Children's Knowledge by Educating Through Science.
“I just want to say thank you for putting together the Rockets Teacher Launch Seminar. I can honestly say it was "the best" seminar I have ever attended. Steve Spangler was amazing. It was non-stop fun! The activities were incredible; ones you can actually use! I have already used them at home with my own children, and at school, and have shared them with my colleagues. You and the Junior League are to be commended for taking the necessary steps to ensure that science and math are alive and well in today's early childhood classrooms. I would love to be included in any other seminars you may offer in the future.” (Christine Watson)
